MSc in Molecular Pathology

This course is conducted by the Department of Human Genetics unit in Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. Degree awarded by the University of Colombo.
This course aims to develop the knowledge, skills attitudes required by medical and science graduates to deliver the latest genetic diagnostics services.

By the end of the course, students must have requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to have working knowledge of:

📌  Molecular technologies including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), conventional and Next Generation Sequencing including Whole Exome Sequencing, and array based DNA technologies.

📌 Cytogenetic including terminology, karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and array comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH).

📌 Clinical applications of cytogenetic such as prenatal diagnosis, identification of congenital abnormalities, and diagnosis and monitoring of malignancy.

📌 Interpretation of molecular and cytogenetic data from clinical cases and compose diagnostic reports, in correlation with clinical, morphologic, and other findings.

📌 Bioinformatics.

📌 Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics.

📌 Quality assurance, assay validation, ethics, regulatory issues, professionalism, and lab • Bioinformatics.

📌 Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics.

Duration - 2 years (Full Time)

Eligibility Requirement:

Applicants must have MBBS or Equivalent Degree registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Or

BSc is a Biomedical Sciences subject or Equivalent Degree.

If

Foreign applicants must have registered with the MBBS or Equivalent Degree registered under the council of the country of residence of the Applicant.  

Application Fee - Rs. 5,000.00

Those who have been selected for the course, the following fees apply

Registration Fee - Rs. 25,000.00
Course Fee - Rs. 800,000 / -
Library Fee - Rs. 2,500.00

Teaching style and methods:

The course of study is designed to cover of two years consisting of four Semesters of 15 week duration and provide a broad basic course in molecular pathology. It will be hosted by local and international faculty using a combination of open and distance learning systems.

Volume 3 - Special Topics
Volume 4 - Introduction to Research Methods
Volume 5B - Bioinformatics
Volume 6B - Diagnostic Methods
Volume 7A - Hands of Experience Connected in a Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory
Semester 3 and 4: Research
Volume 8: Research Project, Research Writing and Safety of Research Papers.

Assessments

Assessments Volumes 1 to 7A contain written and practical assessments and carry out a research project, writing a dissertation and dissertation.

NOTE -

Students will be selected to follow the course from applicants based on their performance at a selection examination (with written Examination & an interview), the written component contributes 75% and the interviewer contributes 25% to the total marks. Students who score 50% or more overall will qualify for the Selection.
